TextExpander: UK Theatres

I often find that I have to repeatedly type out the names of theatres and venues here in the UK. A process that’s easy if a venue has a one word name. But some venues like Bristol Hippodrome or Yvonne Arnaud Theatre or Theatre Royal Bath are fractionally more laborious. Particularly if a venue changes its name like the Royal Opera and Ballet Covent Garden, which used to be the Royal Opera House. Remembering the new name can trip me up.

So I have made a TextExpander Group of theatre, opera house, and venue names in the United Kingdom. The list is could be useful for those touring venues around the UK. I started building this list when I was out on tour regularly. It also helps to identify the nine million Theatre Royals, Lyric and Playhouse Theatres.

For the snippet abbreviation, I generally used the venue’s preferred initials unless that creates ambiguity. So Royal Court is RCT and Royal National Theatre is NT, for example.

The lyric and new snippets feature a way to help you identify which one of those theatre’s you are talking about. Simply type th.lyric and get a list of all the lyric theatres, or th.new to get a list of all the ‘New’ theatres.

Generally, I haven’t included venues that are one word followed by Theatre because I find that I mostly type them out anyway. Hopefully, it’s predictable that the prefix of th. stands for ’theatre’, but TextExpander lets you override that if you like.
